Cooperation agreement between the GEDIA Automotive Group and Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH
The automotive supplier GEDIA Automotive Group and Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU). In order to make the production of pressed body parts and welded assemblies more sustainable in the future, GEDIA will use CO2-reduced steel from the SALCOS® route in the manufacture of its products.
With the transformation program SALCOS® - Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking, the Salzgitter Group is gradually converting its steel production to hydrogen-based processes. The goal is to achieve virtually CO2-free production from 2033. To achieve this, the classic blast furnace route is being replaced by production processes using direct reduction and electric arc furnaces. Salzgitter Flachstahl is already able to supply its customers with CO2-reduced steel via the so-called Peiner Route. The crude steel is produced from scrap in an electric arc furnace and cast into slabs.
GEDIA is a long-standing partner of Salzgitter Flachstahl (SZFG). The company, which has nine locations worldwide, is supplied by SZFG primarily with cold-rolled and galvanized steels for lightweight automotive body construction and chassis components.
Klaus Bierwirth, Chief Commercial Officer / Member of the Executive Board GEDIA: “We are pleased to have a competent partner like Salzgitter AG at our side, a partner for whom sustainability and responsibility are just as important as they are for the GEDIA Automotive Group. By working together and signing the MoU, we are able to take further steps towards CO2 neutrality and continuously reduce our ecological footprint.”
Phillip Meiser, Sales Director, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH: "This MoU further strengthens our long-standing cooperation with GEDIA. In the near future, GEDIA will use ‘green’ steel from our SALCOS® range to manufacture the car body parts of the future – sustainably and, above all, in an environmentally friendly way.”
